Corner Brook – Man In The Mountain

Corner Brook – Man In The Mountain

Man in the Mountain trail, or the Humber Valley trail, is a well-used trail, located just outside of Corner Brook, near Ballam Bridge (turn off to Cox’s Cove, and the north shore). My usually route is to go one way from the Ballam Bridge trail head to Humber Village, which is approximately 14km. Otherwise most people head to the “view point” over looking the Humber River, which is 4km one way, or 8km return to the car park in Ballam Bridge.

We were a little hesitant to go initially, not knowing the snow coverage on the trail (being May and all!), and because the previous time we had lost the trail in sections… at the end of the day it did worked out well, yes, it was snowy in spots, and definitely wet, but we stayed on track and made it through in a fairly good time. Update from 2017, the IATNL volunteer group has put a lot of work in 2016 and 2017 to provide better marking on the trail… in saying that I’ve still meet people who have gotten turned around in sections, so I would recommend becoming familiar with where your going.  As well they have updated a section of trail around Wild Cove pond bypassing some muddy, mucky sections! Have a look at the bottom of the page for more info from the IATNL website.

We started in the car park near Ballam Bridge (or the turn off to get to the north shore of the Bay of Islands, Cox’s Cove, Irish Town etc.).

After a few km’s of climbing you quickly get some beauty views of the Bay of Islands, Corner Brook, and the Humber Valley

Tim waiting for me…

After the views, the climbs continue! There is quite a bit of elevation gain on the trail

Again, the climbing is always rewarded with some nice views.

Titan havin a look east, over the Humber Valley below.

Tim and Nat enjoying the views west of the Bay of Islands, Humber River, and Corner Brook. This is the view point most people turn around, and head back. This view alone is worth the hike!

As you continue on, you descend into a valley where Wild Cove Pond is nestled, after which you continue to climb (again) into a beauty open birch forest. Rarely do you find such a forest in Newfoundland, so its worth the hike just to take the canopy in.

After the climb through the birch forest again your rewarded with some views North of the Humber Valley and Humber River. Obviously its extra rewarding in the fall…

Got a nice one of Nat… were getting close to the finish here. We finished in the Humber Village (~13km), however the IATNL trail continues on to Humber Valley Resort. Great day hike forsure!
