Hiking in Western Newfoundland

The Weather

High Temperatures: 20C-30C, and on the alpine plateau the sun can be extra difficult because of the lack of shade!

Low Temperatures: Below 5C, and with windchill, it can be close to 0C.

Typically: Temperatures range from 20-25C and may drop below 15C overnight.  We take note of the weather prior to departure, where I have guided trips in thick fog, rain, and cold windy, wet weather.

The Terrain

Steep climbs, to a rolling plateau with max elevations of 600-800 meter (~2500 feet). Despite the low elevations as compared to some mountainous areas, the climate, terrain and vegetation, are all alpine, and as such, the weather and environment can make for “interesting circumstances” even when your prepared!

Clothing

For each trip, day hike, or multi-day trip we list clothing options in the trip description.

In general, clients should bring:

  • Good, broken-in, hiking boots.
  • Proper rain jacket and pants.
  • Proper outdoor clothing (non-cotton items)
  • Backpack – Properly fitted, familiar, and used.
