Blow Me Down – Red Gulch

Blow Me Down – Red Gulch

28 km – Unmarked.

Another day another adventure.  I was still training with an eye towards the race in Iceland I had coming up in July, and had always wanted to head over Blow-Me-Down towards Red Gulch… which I had never seen up-close.  My usually route from Serpentine over Blow-Me-Down was through Simms Gulch, however I know some people who had used Red Gulch… so I simply wanted to go take a look.

I would be using my go to winter ski access point through Benoit’s Cove which consisted of heading in through “Webcon Road” just before the only school in town past the town’s water supply and up into the hills.  After that I had a rough plan, depending on the topography to head south-west.

Heading into Benoit’s Cove Water Supply via Webcon Road. The red Blow-Me-Downs in the distance…

Climbing into the Blow-Me-Downs.

Some nice views looking east towards Corner Brook

Once on top the terrain was varied, with small pools, and bogs mixed with rocks!

14 km out towards Red Gulch… fairly flat, again with the Rocks!

Some nice views looking south-west of the Lewis Hills and Serpentine Lake. Red Gulch sits just in front of me…

Red Gulch!

I don’t think I could have asked for a better day.  Obviously it was a bluebird…with a slight cold wind.  From the map above you can see I stayed mostly in the interior, where I didn’t get any great views, and the terrain, again from the photos above was rocky to say the least.  Once I came over Red Swamp Peak, I started seeing the Lewis Hills in the distance, and the view only got better as I descended.    What an area the south-east portion of Blow-Me-Down…. the quick trip only added to my desire to do some more exploring around the area in the future. It was roughly 3 hours out, and 3 hours return… and I can’t really sugarcoat the majority of traveling over the interior, as it was monotonous with lots of rock hoping over technical terrain, with gentle up’s and downs. Great Day all round!
