05 Aug Gros Morne – Long Range Traverse
36km – unmarked back-country route

It was a beautiful day the beginning of August and I was ready to finally complete the Long Range in a day. It had been on my mind for sometime…. and not to get ahead of myself, but it was part of my training for the Deer Lake 67 taking place September long weekend. As well, it just seemed like a fun thing to do… I had completed some long routes previously in New Zealand, and the Lewis Hills, however this was my first long back-country solo route in Newfoundland. My goal was under 8 hours, and I finished the day in around 7 and a half hours. Good times!
Note at the time I didn’t take any photos being too focused on my goal, and not having a ton of experience in these thru hikes… but in any event the photos below will give you a good indication of my day.

Preparing to board Bon-Tours Western Brook Pond boat tour.

The views are amazing was the boat travels east down Western Brook Pond

After being dropped off at the east end I started on the ascent of the gorge which includes “moose meadow”, and of course more beauty views of Western Brook

One of the most photographed spots in the park… and the most advertised. Looking west down through western brook pond.

After the climb getting to the view point, I continued on top of the Long Range Plateau… which doesn’t necessarily mean flat, as you can see.

Marks Pond, near campsite number 2. The terrain is rolling punctuated with rock out-crops, bands of trees/ tuckamore and lakes/ ponds.

10 Mile Pond. As mentioned Western Brook gets all the attention… however, the views around 10 mile pond at least equal what Western Brook has to offer.

Close to the finish. The last section before I had to drop down into Ferry Gulch, located on the south side of Gros Morne Mountain.
